LCL Explores the Rich History of Balabanov’s House, Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Luxembourg Creative Lab recently embarked on an enriching journey to the ancient city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where we were welcomed with open arms by the staff of Balabanov’s House. This historic residence, nestled in the heart of Plovdiv’s Old Town, proved to be a treasure trove of culture and heritage, leaving the visitors from Luxembourg in awe of its splendor.

Built in the early 19th century by the merchant Hadzhi Panayot Lampsha, Balabanov’s House stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of its time. Spanning an impressive 546 square meters, the house boasts a rich history, having passed through the hands of three owners before bearing the name of its final proprietor, the tradesman Luka Balabanov. Today, it serves as a beacon of cultural exchange and artistic expression in Plovdiv.

During our visit, the team from Luxembourg Creative Lab had the privilege of immersing themselves in the house’s captivating atmosphere. We were treated to a guided tour, generously provided by the hospitable staff, who showcased not only the architectural marvels of the building but also its significance as a hub for modern Bulgarian art. The ground floor hosts a permanent exhibition, while the second floor offers a glimpse into the interior design of the Revival period, once serving as a guest hall.

Beyond its historical significance, Balabanov’s House serves as a vibrant venue for a myriad of cultural events, including exhibitions, literature premieres, chamber music concerts, theatre performances, and meetings. Notably, it is the esteemed host of the International Chamber Music Festival – Balabanov’s House Music Days, a testament to its enduring relevance in the cultural landscape of Plovdiv.

Engaging in fruitful discussions with the local community, Luxembourg Creative Lab explored potential collaborations in the cultural and creative sectors. The visit not only fostered cultural exchange but also laid the groundwork for future partnerships that promise to enrich both the Luxembourgish and Bulgarian artistic scenes.

For those inspired to embark on their own journey of discovery, Balabanov’s House welcomes visitors daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tickets are affordably priced, with individual rates set at 5 BGN (2.5 EUR) for adults.
